The Unite Union has accused Coventry City Council of needlessly escalating the dispute over bin lorry drivers on strike

They've been taking industrial action for over a month now over pay and working conditions

But yesterday (Wednesday) it was revealed that the independent body ACAS ruled the council had been paying bin lorry drivers in the city correctly.

The council in response to that decision had called for the strikes to be called off.

Unite are currently continuing to ballot for further industrial action though, which would last into the summer.

Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said;

“Once again the council changed the ‘goalposts’ when they had a chance to reach a reasonable settlement. The meeting with Acas was a farce based on an old, discredited job evaluation system, with council officers calling the shots and yet again George Duggins was not present.

“A toxic mix of malevolence and incompetence appears to reign at City Hall and it is about time the Council opened its books so taxpayers can see what else is going on.

We've contacted Coventry Council to ask if they have any reponse to Ms Graham's comments

Yesterday (Wednesday) the council released a statement calling on Unite to end the strikes immediately.

They said ACAS looked at the process that came to the original decision on pay and found that it had been “undertaken in a fair and open manner.”

They added that both sides agreed to respect and abide by what ACAS decided.
