A sex attacker who broke into a house before threatening and raping a woman has been jailed for 15 years.

Officers say Maxime Owona forced himself onto the woman after she was awoken in bed at her home in Tile Hill, Coventry, in April this year.

He was arrested on the same day.

The woman - who knew Owona previously - was pinned down and left fearing for her safety as he threatened to harm her unless she agreed to his demands.

Owona, who has no fixed address, had smashed a window to gain access to her home.

The 33-year-old was convicted of rape and trespass following a trial at Warwick Crown Court.

He was sentenced last Monday (28 November) to 15 years imprisonment and will be on the sex offender's register for life.

He has also been given a restraining order not to contact the woman.

DC Evie Griffiths, from the public protection unit, said: "This was a traumatic ordeal for the woman who was left fearing for her safety in the place she should feel most safe - her home.

"She managed to contact a relative who alerted us to the attack and we were able to swiftly arrest Owona - who initially gave us a false name. This was a despicable crime and he's now been put behind bars for a long time."

West Midlands Police say if you’ve been subjected to a sexual assault, no matter how long ago, they have specialist officers to help you through the justice process. They are also stressing that victims of rape are protected by law and have live-long anonymity.
