Police investigation launched following vandalism at a Leamington Spa pride site
Organisers of Warwickshire Pride say flags were ripped and burnt.
Warwickshire police have launched an investigation after reports of vandals trashing the site of Warwickshire Pride ahead of the event on Saturday (17th August).
The organisers say that glass was smashed, pride flags were ripped and burned, and a gazebo was destroyed in the Leamington Spa park.
The Pride in the Pump Room Gardens still went ahead on the weekend, with a range of performances, stalls, and a march taking place.
In a statement, a police spokesperson said: "An investigation has been opened into an alleged incident of criminal damage prior to the Warwickshire Pride event."
They are currently asking the public for any information on the alleged offence.
Warwickshire Pride said on social media that the destruction was "a reminder of why we do this."
"Hate will never win. Hate will only strengthen us. Hate will only make us louder and prouder.
"While many Pride events have been mainstreamed, with major companies often sponsoring these events as fun days out, the intent behind why they are held is much darker.
"Those in the LGBTQ+ community are still vulnerable to assault, discrimination, and possibly alienation from friends and family on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Pride events exist as a combination of protest, community, and to provide a safe space that allows people to freely express who they are without fear."
Police have requested for anyone with any knowledge of the alleged incident to call Warwickshire Police and cite the crime reference number 23/35055/24.
