West Midlands Police will be guarding the funeral of local teenager, Luke Cleary, who died last month in a collision.

The funeral will take place today.

They are going with the family's permission after a biker vigil that was held after Mr Cleary died got out of hand, with some bikers throwing fireworks at police officers.

13 people were arrested, with two being charged in connection with the disorder.

Chief Superintendent Pete Henrick from Coventry Police, said: “We fully understand that people want to pay their respects, but we ask that this is done peacefully and that no-one brings further disorder to the streets of Coventry.

"Anyone who takes part in this type of behaviour needs to understand that they risk being arrested, charged with criminal offences and could potentially be jailed."

The police have been granted Section 60 powers until 10pm today. This will allow officers to stop and search people in a specific area even if they do not have suspicions about them.

Some officers will be equipped with DNA spray. This is an invisible solution that clings to skin and clothing for up to months afterwards. It can be used as evidence to prove that a person was involved in a specific incident. It will be used to tag any offenders at the funeral.

Chief Superintendent Pete Henrick continued: “We are working together with our colleagues from Warwickshire Police and we will be in and around the area of where the funeral and wake are taking place to offer reassurance to Luke’s family and the wider public, and will take action against anyone who is intent on committing crime.”
