Nuneaton shoplifter jailed
Daniel Laws has been sentenced, after a series of offences
A Nuneaton man's been jailed for a string of shoplifting offences.
Daniel Laws, 34, of Tarn Rise, has been sentenced to 24 weeks for six counts of shoplifting, one count of attempted shoplifting and a further six counts of breaching criminal behaviour orders.
Laws is also required to pay a victims’ surcharge of £154.
The sentencing was carried out at Coventry Magistrates Court on Saturday 20 January.
As a result of previous court judgements, Laws has been issued with a criminal behaviour order requiring him not to enter Nuneaton Town Centre; Horeston Grange Shopping Centre; a supermarket on Weddington Road; and a second supermarket on Kem Street.
All of these conditions were breached over the course of committing six offences, which were as follows:
Sunday 15 October 2023
At 9:55am, Laws was seen on CCTV to enter a supermarket on Weddington Road in Nuneaton, in breach of his criminal behaviour order.
He was seen to stuff a quantity of meat items into his jumper, to a total value of ÂŁ54.89.
A member of staff challenged Laws, who returned other items he had also taken.
Laws then left, making no attempt to pay for the hidden jumper meat.

At 9am, Laws re-entered the same supermarket on Weddington Road, concealing ÂŁ78.10 worth of cheese and steak about his person and then leaving the store.
Friday 12 January 2024
On this day, Laws entered a shop in Newtown Retail Park, in violation of his criminal behaviour order.
He filled a bag with ÂŁ300 worth of cleaning and protein products before leaving the store without paying for them.
Sunday 14 January 2024
Laws returned to the supermarket on Weddington Road, where he was seen to fill his trousers with ÂŁ47.83 worth of steaks, before leaving without any attempt to pay.

At around 4:30pm at a supermarket in Horeston Grange Shopping Centre, the alarms were triggered as the fire door was opened.
Later checking of the CCTV showed Laws in the minutes prior taking ÂŁ200 of alcoholic spirits into his coat, before leaving through the fire exit.
This incident also violated Laws’ criminal behaviour order.

On this occasion, Laws returned to the shop in Newtown Retail Park, but was clocked by the security officer who asked to see inside his bag on the way out.
After Laws withdrew two air fresheners, the officer asked to see inside the bag again – discovering a number of other laundry products inside. Laws then left the store.
In interview, Laws claimed that he sold the items he stole from the various shops.
Investigating officers PC Cooper and PC Roberts of Nuneaton SNT said “Laws is a well-known face with us at the station, and not for any good reason.
“Taking a 24-week time-out should hopefully boost the message that previous criminal behaviour orders have tried to send – there are better ways to live your life than to leech from honest businesses.”
