A man has received a custodial sentence for being concerned in the production of cannabis and the illegal abstract of electricity in Leamington Spa.

Jetmir Zika, aged 29 years, appeared at Warwick Crown Court on 18 November.

The Court heard that Zika had been arrested by officers on 5 October, during the execution of a drugs warrant in Plymouth Place. He had been located in the property along with 152 cannabis plants. The electricity supply to the house was also found to have been illegally bypassed.

It was later discovered that Zika, of no fixed abode, had entered the country from Albania by illegal means. He claimed that he had been working at the property to pay the debt incurred from his transportation.

Zika received a custodial sentence of 12 months and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £158.

PC James Lake from Leamington Spa Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “Although it is unlikely that Zika was the mastermind behind the cultivation or distribution of drugs in Leamington, he was found with a significant amount of cannabis plants. The gravity of the case against him warranted this custodial sentence.

“We hope this will deter others who involve themselves in drug cultivation in the mistaken belief that the associated risks are small.”
