Man from Nuneaton jailed for attacking his ex-partner

A man from Nuneaton has been jailed for over three and a half years after he beat his ex-partner.
33-year-old Liam Tweed, of no fixed address, hit his victim over the head after she allegedly left him alone at a bar in Coventry - where he got attacked.
Tweed also destroyed items in her flat like her television and ornaments.
On 22 January, Liam Tweed was sentenced to 45 months in prison and is required to pay a victims’ surcharge of £228.
He was found guilty of Section 18 wounding with intent, criminal damage to property, and destruction of property.
Background to the case
On Saturday 19 August 2023, 33-year-old Liam Tweed of no fixed address travelled from Nuneaton to a pub on The Burges in Coventry with his then-partner.
While there, Tweed drank multiple pints of lager, and got angry with another patron of the bar who he believed had made inappropriate comments towards his partner.
Tweed visited the toilets, and when he came back out, he said he was unable to see where his partner had gone and left the bar.
Tweed’s partner, after Tweed failed to return for some time, decided to get a bus home. After arriving home, she turned in for the night.
After visiting the supermarket, Tweed claims that he was assaulted on two separate occasions in Coventry – once when he returned to the bar, and again near to Coventry Cathedral resulting in a fractured hip. He said he did not know why he was attacked on either occasion.
Eventually, Tweed also got on a bus, and travelled back to his partner’s house.
The victim woke up to Tweed shouting at her: “It’s your fault that I got battered, you left me in Cov and ran off”.
Tweed grabbed and shoved her into the bathroom, where she bit him to get away. He then grabbed a clown ornament and smashed it over her head twice as she tried to find her phone.
After seeing blood, Tweed left the room, giving the victim enough time to push a set of drawers against the door and to ring the police.
While she was on the phone, Tweed punched through the top of the bedroom door, before running downstairs and taking a hammer to four bay windows downstairs, as well as punching holes in other walls in the house.
He also destroyed a television and ornaments.
Tweed then left the property, and later that night handed himself in to the police.
Warwickshire Police response
Investigating officer DC McCauley from Warwickshire Police said:
“Tweed got drunk, got angry, got belligerent, and decided that his own faults were the fault of the victim.
“He attacked her. He destroyed her property. He treated her as property. His actions are reprehensible, and we can only hope after 45 months of concrete walls and bars that he might come to a full understanding of his actions.
“We’re working with the victim to provide support at this time, and we would encourage anyone else who has suffered violence in their relationship to come and talk to us sooner rather than later.”
