A teacher from Rugby has taken on a gruelling Iron challenge in memory of one of his former pupil died of a brain tumour.
Olli Hawkins, 27, who teaches PE at Arnold Lodge School in Leamington, swam 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles and ran a marathon in aid of a Warwick children’s charity.
It’s after one of his former students, Charles Ludford, died in February 2020, eight months after being diagnosed with cancer.
He said: “When people say that children are a delight to teach, I don't think any pupil could epitomise that phrase more than Charles.
“Even when facing the challenge of his illness, Charles was incredibly positive in his battle, still being the cheeky charming young boy, he will always be remembered for”
Hawkins said he always wanted to complete an Ironman but was waiting for a cause that could properly inspire him.
“I know that I'm lucky to have taught Charles and to complete the challenge of an Ironman still doesn't come close to the bravery and courage he showed.”
Molly Olly’s wishes supports children with life threatening illnesses and offers emotional support and donates therapeutic toys to children directly to hospitals across the country.
It funded the first West Midlands paediatric palliative consultant based at Birmingham Children’s hospital and a safe nonclinical space where families can talk about their illnesses with medical teams.
Charles’ mum, Jennie Ludford, now works for the charity.
She said: “I am so touched that Ollie is doing this gruelling challenge in memory of our beautiful boy, Charles.
“To know he was so highly thought of is one of the things that keeps us going as a family, and I know that the money Ollie has raised will make such a difference to the children and families that we support at Molly Ollys.”
