The West Midlands Fire and Rescue service have confirmed a blaze at a block of student flats at the University of Warwick was started accidentally.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the Arthur Vick Residence in Canley just before 8.40pm on Wednesday 19 November.

A WMFRS sepokesperson said: "At the height of this incident, six fire engines, a hydraulic aerial platform and two 4×4 brigade response vehicles were in attendance, crewed by firefighters from Canley, Coventry, Binley, Foleshill, Hay Mills and Solihull.

"This was a fire that started in the kitchen on the second floor of a three-storey residential block of student accommodation. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used five jets to extinguish the fire. They were supported by drone operations.

"Two flats were heavily damaged by fire, and several more were smoke-logged.

"An attending Fire Investigator confirmed this fire started accidentally.

"We scaled down our resources once the fire was confirmed to be out, and two fire engines remained at the site overnight on a watching brief. Our final crew left this incident at 7.15am."

The University of Warwick had no reports of any injuries and the affected students are being given alternative accomodation:

“Emergency services were called to a fire on campus at the Arthur Vick 1 residence block on Wednesday night. The fire is now out. All students have been evacuated and no injuries have been reported. Those affected are being helped by the University to find alternative forms of emergency accommodation. Wellbeing services are providing support to those affected. There will be an ongoing security presence to ensure the safety of students.”
