A museum in Coventry's celebrating a year of a very popular dinosaur skeleton.

Dippy the Diplodocus has been at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum since February 2023 and to celebrate, a celebration is being put on.

The Big Dippy Birthday Bash is taking place at the museum on Valentine's Day (14 February) between 10:30 and 15:30 - with a collection of free activities for visitors to enjoy.

Coined 'the Nation's favourite dinosaur', the Diplodocus skeleton arrived in the Midlands from the National History Museum - having been gifted by Andrew Carnegie in 1905.

It was the first Diplodocus to go on display anywhere in the world.

Diplodocus carnegii lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 155 – 145 million years ago and their skeletons have been found in North America.

They were huge, plant-eating dinosaurs, with long whip-like tails. They grew to about 24-26 metres long and probably weighed up to around 15 tonnes.

For comparison, a London double-decker bus is around 14 metres long and weighs 12 tonnes.
