Carers in Coventry and Warwickshire will be celebrated in an upcoming awards ceremony as a local charity highlights the life-changing work of unpaid carers and the stress many are under.

Nominations for the Career Awards are open until 23 May, with a ceremony planned for 13 June at Warwick School, where the winners from seven different categories will be announced.

Organisers said the ceremony will highlight the challenges faced by the 16,000 unpaid carers working in the region.

Lisa Sergiew from Carers Trust in Coventry said: "We do see carers who are really stressed out, and they don't know where to turn to for help. They're worn out, with no support services, but we aim to stop them getting to the point of carer breakdown."

The awards form part of Carers Week (10-16 June), with this year's theme of 'Putting Carers on the Map." Carers Trust Heart of England will mark the occasion by hosting group activities including a Walk for Carers and information day.

Lisa said: "All services are strained at the moment, whether that be charities or social care. Carers provide all that care and save money on the social care system.

"Taking a neighbour shopping once a week or looking after a loved one 24 hours a day, being able to provide that care is priceless."

Among the seven categories in this year's awards is the Young Adult Carer award, Carer of the Year award, Carer-Friendly School or College of the Year, and Fundraiser of the Year.

Lisa said: "All carers we come across tend to be really selfless people, and I know at last year's awards there were a few tears because the awards say remind people that the important work that they do is recognised."
