Council investigates after giant pile of rubbish dumped in Coventry car park
It was dumped at Fargo car park on Paynes Lane in Hillfields.
Coventry council is investigating after a pile of rubbish “the size of two tennis courts” was dumped at a city car park.
The huge fly-tipping mound was spotted at Fargo car park on Paynes Lane in Hillfields last week (20 December.)
The heap contained toilets, sinks, bricks, bags of rubbish, and household waste, said eyewitness Jamie Gray.
“I’d say it covered an area the size of two tennis courts,” he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS.)
“I don’t visit that area often but I know it can have fly-tipping from time to time – but nothing on this scale,” he added.
“I did see a police van there later when I was leaving.”
Responding to enquiries the day afterwards (21 December), Coventry City Council said it is taking steps to find the culprit and work on a longer term solution.
A spokesperson said: “We have been in and collected evidence and we are looking at CCTV to see if we can identify who did this.
“We asked the police to support us on this on 20 December as this is criminal activity and we will continue to work with them.
“Our team will be out to clear the site today and then we plan to secure the area to prevent this happening again.
“We will then look to see if we can find a solution in the new year that protects the site and enables it to work as a car park.”
The council spokesperson also confirmed the unusually large scale of the mess abandoned at the car park.
They said: “Any fly-tipping in any area is shocking – but this really is another level and it will take time and money to clear which is why it’s important we do all we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
