Belgrade Theatre cancels Russian Opera & Ballet performances following Ukraine invasion
It follows the invasion of Ukraine
The Belgrade Theatre has confirmed that it has cancelled scheduled performances of the Russian State Opera & Ballet.
The Opera was due to perform at the theatre next month, and the ballet in November.
This is in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia last week.
A statement from the CEO Laura Elliot & Creative Director Corey Campbell said;
"The Belgrade was created to help heal its community after World War II. Today it is a Theatre of Sanctuary in the heart of Coventry – the City of Peace and Reconciliation.
“Our responsibility is to all communities and this decision to cancel has been measured and informed. We wish to send a message against war and oppression. We do not wish to ostracise any of our Ukrainian or Russian communities that help to make Coventry the beautiful, multicultural home it is.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this conflict including artists from all nationalities who perform for peace. We recognise standing in solidarity to a cause or community should never come at the expense of another.
"Theatres should be safe spaces to bring people together – we wish to hold a public conversation for peace and reconciliation for anyone affected by this issue."
