Appeal after attempted robbery in Nuneaton as man pretends to be police officer
The offender showed fake ID and demanded to search a car
Detectives in Nuneaton are appealing for witnesses after an attempted robbery in the carpark outside Odeon in St. David’s Way.
The incident happened at around 6.35pm yesterday (Sunday 23 January).
The male victim reported someone approached him in the car park pretending to be a police officer and showing fake identification. He demanded to search the vehicle.
The offender got into the car and attempted to drive it away but couldn’t get it into reverse. The offender was pulled out of the car by the victim and his friends, and he fled empty handed.
The victim suffered a minor head injury in the incident.
Detective Inspector Gareth Unett of Nuneaton CID said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may be able to help to get in touch.
“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dash cam footage from the area.
“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 314 of 23 January 2022, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
“This is obviously a concerning incident given the offender pretended to be a police officer. Fortunately, these types of incidents are very rare but if you do ever have any concerns about an officer’s identity they will always be happy to provide extra verification.
“If you are concerned around the identity of an officer then call our control room on 101 to seek additional verification.”
