British Divers Marine Life Rescue have been involved in a slightly unusual animal rescue on the Cornish coast - a young roe deer found in a cave!
BDMLR were called out on Saturday 21st May, after the poor creature was spotted by a group of kayakers.
The animal, understood to have been discovered at a beach near Falmouth, was dehydrated and exhausted but had not suffered any major wounds.
The deer was taken to Rosemullion Vets in Helston, where it was given antibiotics and an IV of fluids.
It was then taken to a wooded area close to where it had been found and released.
Posting on their Facebook page, BDMLR said: "Today we had a slightly unusual rescue! Some kayakers (Tom and family) found a young roe deer in a cave (perhaps it had fallen into the sea we are unsure).
"They took it to the coast path and it was quite shaken up.
"Unable to gain any rescue response, the call found its way to us at BDMLR via Marine Strandings Network.
"Not quite our remit, but we love a challenge and this little one needed help.
"Our out of hours coordinator @Lizzi_L called one of our experienced medics @gill.fisher.501 to attend whilst background problem solving to identify if and where this animal could be rehabilitated and which vets could help.
"After a few dead ends, we managed to gain agreement that Last Chance Hotel would take the animal in if needed and Felicity at Rosemullion Vet would check it over.
"Gill (with help from Tessa (an environmental officer) and Tom’s son managed to contain the deer and Gill transported it to the vet.
"Happily on examination the animal showed that whilst it was exhausted and dehydrated it was without major wounds, so some IV fluids and antibiotics were administered before it had another car journey with Gill and was released into a wooded area near where it had been found.
"We hope this deer does well".
