Strong winds could cause some disruption across Cornwall today (Friday 14 July).

The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning, which is in force from 7.00am - 7.00pm.

The Kernow Weather Team (KWT) say the main concern is the strength of these "unseasonably" strong winds:

"Gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely quite widely for a time, with gusts over 50 - 60+mph affecting some coasts and hills (from a south-easterly direction).

"Temperatures wise it'll between 15c and 18c but it'll feel very humid too.

"This is an unusual time of year for such strong winds and, with many people on holiday or planning outdoor activities, they are likely to cause some disruption.

"In addition, heavy rain could lead to standing water and spray on roads and consequently difficult driving conditions. Winds are expected to ease through the evening."

They add that the winds will remains strong into Saturday.

What to expect?

  • Possible delays to rail, air and ferry transport due to strong winds
  • Some damage to trees or temporary structures such as marquees, tents & inflatables, could occur
  • Standing water and spray on roads leading to difficult driving conditions

The Met Office are urging people venturing to the coast or taking a trip to the beach to be prepared for those places to have some of the strongest winds.

The RNLI recently increased their patrols across South West beaches in time for the peak season.

In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
