Woman dies after becoming ill in the sea off St Ives, police have confirmed

Paramedics, HM Coastguard, Cornwall Air Ambulance and the RNLI were also called to the scene

Police have confirmed a woman has died after becoming unwell in the sea off St Ives.

Officers were called to Porthmeor Beach on Sunday 14 August, amid concerns for a person's welfare.

Paramedics, Coastguard crews and Cornwall Air Ambulance were also called at around 5pm, along with the RNLI.

The casualty in her 60s was treated at the scene however, tragically, she could not be saved.

Devon & Cornwall Police have confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

A force spokesperson said: "Police were called just after 5pm on Sunday 14 August following concern for the welfare of a woman on Porthmeor Beach, St Ives.

"The woman had become unwell while in the sea.

"HM Coastguard, RNLI, police, ambulance, and air ambulance attended.

"The woman, in her 60s, was treated at the scene but despite the best efforts of emergency services, was pronounced deceased.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time".
