A woman has been airlifted to hospital after falling from rocks on the north Cornish coast near Newquay.

The local RNLI lifeboat got the call to Holywell Bay on Sunday morning to help the 61-year-old who had suffered multiple injuries.

The crew had just completed a routine exercise and were rehousing the lifeboats at Newquay Harbour when the call was received from UK Coastguard at 11.30am and due to the nature of the incident they responded in both of the charity's inshore lifeboats.

When the lifeboat crew arrived at the northern end of Holywell Bay, the woman had been transferred across the rocks on a stretcher by members of Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club and Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team. The St Agnes Coastguard Rescue Team also provided support.

The casualty was assessed on the beach by a passing doctor who had been walking nearby when the accident happened.

Three of the RNLI volunteers went ashore to assist, including two who are NHS paramedics.

After taking charge of the woman's care and providing further assessment of her multiple injuries the senior paramedic requested the attendance of the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter.

The injured casualty was airlifted to the regional major trauma centre at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

The Newquay RNLI team said: "A great team effort by everyone involved and we send the lady our best wishes for a speedy recovery."
