The unique and unusual polling stations in Cornwall... from a castle to beach cafes

Voters in Cornwall will get to make their choice for Cornwall Council at a variety of different locations, from a castle to a venue once played by Ed Sheeran.

The local elections on May 6th will see scores of polling stations open for the day for those wanting to cast their votes - if they haven't already by post.

And while many of those polling stations will be based in traditional locations such as village halls, council offices and schools there are a few which are quite different.

The most unique has to be Caerhays Castle, which is where people living close by will get to choose who should represent St Goran, Tregony and The Roseland on Cornwall Council.

The Grade I listed building is located in stunning gardens and overlooks Porthluney Cove and could possibly lay claim to being the polling station with the best sea view.

However it is not the only one in Cornwall in a coastal location - the Seaton Beach Cafe, for voters in Looe East & Deviock, sits a stone's throw from the shore.

Also enjoying a view over the sea is the Beach House B&B at Widemouth Bay which will be where some voters in the Poundstock ward will be marking their ballot papers.

And the Fistral Beach Hotel is also used as a polling station for voters in Newquay Central & Pentire and offers views across the famous surfing waves at Fistral.

Another polling station not far from the sea is the Paddle Shed at Portmellon, for voters in Mevagissey & St Austell Bay.

And that's not the only one with paddles as the Castle Dore Rowing Club is a polling station for the Fowey, Tywardreath & Par ward.

Or maybe you will be casting your vote at a venue which has seen the likes of Ed Sheeran, the Kaiser Chiefs, Alt-J and The Fall grace its stage - Princess Pavilion in Falmouth is a polling station for voters in the Falmouth Arwenack division.

And there is another one with a stage at The Lane Theatre in Newquay, which is used for voters in both the Newquay Porth & Tretherras and St Columb Minor and Colan wards.

Voters in Hayle West could find themselves amongst feathered friends if their polling station is the one based at Paradise Park.

Truro Cathedral has its offices used as a polling station with voters in the Truro Moresk & Trehaverne ward voting at the Grade I listed building.

Fire stations are also used for people to cast their votes with those in Tolvaddon and Polruan both set to host polling stations.

And, finally, there are also some pubs being used as polling stations across Cornwall including The Tavern Inn in Newquay; Balnoon Inn, Lelant Downs; Railway Tavern in Truro and the Hawkins Arms in Zelah.
