Classical musicians of Cornwall will perform a musical protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

They will gather on Truro on Sunday 6th March, for a performance of Mussorgsky's The Great Gate of Kiev.

Within just a couple of days of organising the event, over 100 people had signed up!

The musicians will be conducted by Matt Harrison, who said: "It's a musical protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Kyiv and we feel, in Cornwall, pretty helpless about what's going on and what can we do.

"Music is a great way to bring people together and unite people and we hope that, in some way, our small gesture will do that".

Bill Bankes-Jones BEM, Founder and Artistic Director of Tête à Tête (Europe’s largest Festival of new opera) and Cornish resident is leading the musical flash mob for Ukraine.

This is not the first time that Bankes-Jones has brought together musicians of Cornwall to perform for a cause.

In 2021, he arranged for a 1000-strong orchestra of whirly tubes to serenade world leaders attending the G7 summit as a reminder for them to 'cherish the ocean'.

Speaking about Sunday's event, Matt Harrison said: "As musicians we often travel all around the world and we hope it goes some way to spread the message and feeling that if you want to help the people of Ukraine in any way you can then do; that's what we hope people will get out of this.

"It's so horrific and harrowing. This does feel like a positive contribution that we can do towards the cause to raise awareness.

"Bringing a group of over 100 musicians together in solidarity with the Ukrainian people is hopefully a positive".

The musical flash mob will take place on Truro's Lemon Quay at 2pm on Sunday 6th March.
