Warning to avoid travel as back end of 'Storm Aurore' batters Cornwall
A Met Office warning for heavy rain and strong winds will remain in force until the early hours of Thursday
Last updated 20th Oct 2021
CoastSafe has tweeted a warning to avoid travel as torrential rain and strong winds batter Cornwall.
The weather system currently sweeping across the south-west is thought to be the result of the back end of 'Storm Aurore', named by Météo-France.
The UK Met Office says gusts of up to 60mph have been recorded in some parts of the Duchy.
Fallen trees are being reported across Cornwall, as well as flash flooding on the roads caused by the downpours.
Kernow Weather Team says straight-line winds have been experienced, as well as a possible tornado in the Portreath area!
CoastSafe tweeted: "Some serious weather conditions hitting Devon & Cornwall right now.
"Lots of collisions on the roads & weather related logs including trees down across the force.
"If you can avoid travel until this system passes through that would be advisable".
Multiple flood warnings and alerts are in force across the UK, including five in Cornwall.
These are the West Cornwall Rivers, North Cornwall Rivers, the River Lynher, the Upper River Tamar and the South Cornwall Coast from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head.
On the coast, the unsettled weather and large waves combined with spring tides could cause overtopping.
The Met Office yellow weather warning for heavy rain came into force at 4pm on Wednesday 20th October and will remain in place until 3am on Thursday.
The alert states: "An area of heavy rain reaching southwest England late Wednesday afternoon spreads eastwards across southern England, reaching the far southeast of England by mid-evening.
"Rain will last for around six hours in any location, finally clearing southeast England during the early hours of Thursday.
"Rain may be accompanied by coastal gales and, in a few places, thunder.
"15 to 25mm of rain is widely expected with 30 to 50mm possible in a few places".
