A six-hour thunderstorm warning has been issued for Cornwall.

The Met Office says the yellow weather alert will be in place from 5am to 11am on Wednesday morning.

Lightning strikes, heavy showers and hail are all forecast and there could be up to 20mm of rainfall in places.

We are being warned that there could also be power disruption, travel trouble and flooding to homes and businesses.

What to expect

• Some short term loss of power and other services is likely

• There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus

• Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes

• Delays to train services are possible

• Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, perhaps leading to some damage to buildings or structures

"An area of thunderstorms will move northwards into southwestern parts of the UK on Wednesday morning. Lightning is likely to be the main hazard from this though some heavy rain and hail is possible, with perhaps 15-20 mm of rain in a short period for some spots.

"The nature of thunderstorms is that many areas will see little or no rain and miss the lightning but where they do occur the increased numbers of people makes disruption more likely."
