The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 387 in the last 24 hours, official figures show – and three more deaths were recorded.

A total of 76,284 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on December 21 (Tuesday), up from 75,897 on Monday.

Latest weekly figures show the Duchy recorded 2,763 cases in the seven days to Thursday 16 December, giving us a case rate of 480.1 per 100,000 people.

Public health officials have also said the recent surge is likely being driven by the Omicron variant.

People are being urged to book their vaccines and stick to 'Plan B' restrictions, including to take regular tests.

The Prime Minister has resisted imposing any new coronavirus restrictions, but hinted he could change his mind before New Year.

On Wednesday, the Health Secretary announced the self-isolation period for those who test positive will be reduced from 10 to seven days, as long as negative lateral flows are returned on days six and seven.

There were also three more coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 626 people had died in the area by December 21 (Tuesday) – up from 623 on Monday.

It means there have been 10 deaths in the past week, which is an increase on six the previous week.

They were among 8,197 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

The figures also show that four in five people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 427,044 people had received both jabs by December 20 (Monday) – 81% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 82% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
