The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 1,025 over the weekend, official figures show – and four more deaths were recorded.

A total of 75,897 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on December 20 (Monday), up from 74,872 on Friday.

Latest weekly figures show the Duchy recorded 2,793 cases in the seven days to Wednesday 15 December, giving us a case rate of 485.3 per 100,000 people.

Public health officials have also said the recent surge is likely being driven by the Omicron variant.

People are being urged to book their vaccines and stick to 'Plan B' restrictions, including to take regular tests.

The Prime Minister has resisted imposing any new coronavirus restrictions, but hinted he could change his mind before New Year.

Boris Johnson says the government will 'reserve the possibility' of tightening rules, adding that data for the Omicron variant was being monitored "hour-by-hour".

There were also four more coronavirus deaths recorded over the weekend in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 623 people had died in the area by December 20 (Monday) – up from 619 on Friday.

It means there have been 10 deaths in the past week, which is an increase on five the previous week.

They were among 8,173 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

Figures reported on a Monday are likely to be lower as a result of a lag in reporting deaths over the weekend.

The figures also show that four in five people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 426,573 people had received both jabs by December 19 (Sunday) – 80% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 82% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

The latest coronavirus figures for Cornwall can be found on the government's website.
