Two 13-year-olds winched to safety after getting stranded along south Cornwall coast

Their paddleboards had blown onto rocks

Two teenagers have been winched to safety after their paddle boards were blown onto rocks off the Cornish coast.

The 13-year-olds managed to climb out of the water at Gorran Haven on Sunday afternoon but were stranded.

A local surfer, who is also a teacher in Newquay, paddled out to stay with them until help arrived.

Coastguard crews from Mevagissey and St Austell, the Fowey RNLI, paramedics and police were all called to the scene.

A rescue helicopter brought the youngsters back to safety and they were reunited with their parents.

"The team were paged at 1521hrs following two thirteen year old casualties on paddle boards being blown into rocks, north of Gorran Haven Beach. The casualties managed to climb out of the water but were stranded on rocks.

"A local surfer paddled out to stay with them until help arrived.

"Working with Mevagissey Coastguard, Fowey RNLI, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, and Devon & Cornwall Police.

"The casualties were winched from the rocks by the Coastguard Helicopter, which landed at Gorran Cricket Club to transfer them to the ambulance. Both were discharged to their parents on scene.

"The surfer was brought back to shore in the all weather lifeboat.

"A great team effort, resulting in a successful rescue.

"If you see anyone in difficulty on the coast, please call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

A teacher from Newquay is being hailed a hero after he rushed to help the pair when they got into difficulty. __

"Mr Rogers, Assistant Headteacher, has been hailed as a 'hero' after his quick actions in helping to rescue two 13 year olds when they became stuck on rocks on Sunday afternoon at Gorran Haven.

"The teenagers had been blown onto rocks by strong winds when they were out paddle boarding and then became stranded.

"Mr Rogers saw what happened, paddled out alone to assist the teenagers, and waited with them until the lifeboat and rescue helicopter arrived to take them to safety.

"Everyone at Treviglas is incredibly proud of Mr Rogers!"
