Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry toll hikes put on hold

Proposed price hikes on the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry early next year, have been put on hold, after a ÂŁ1.6million grant from the Government has been secured.

Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council were urging ministers to plug the financial gap left by the Covid-19 pandemic, as fewer people were travelling.

The charge for a car will stay at ÂŁ2, or ÂŁ1 for pre-paid journeys.

The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee said each council will receive ÂŁ821,553 from the compensation scheme set up by the Government to help local authorities deal with the impact of the coronavirus.

This will cover the period up to July 2020. A further application for a second tranche of funding to cover the remainder of the financial year’s losses is also anticipated to be successful.

The bridge and ferry carry about 18 million vehicles a year. They receive no government subsides
