It is understood that a suspected unexploded bomb, which saw homes in a Cornish village evacuated, was not a bomb after all.

Residents at Godolphin Cross near Helston reported being asked to leave their properties on Saturday afternoon.

Police and a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team rushed to the scene shortly after 2pm on 30th July.

A 200m cordon is believed to have been set up, before people were allowed to return to their homes at around 6.30pm.

Posting on Facebook, one resident who lived outside the cordon said: "A bomb has been found in a garden in Godolphin Cross. Everyone has been evacuated to Carleen Village Hall with a 200 yard cordon around the village".

They continued by offering help to those inside the exclusion zone, adding: "We are fine being outside the cordon".

In an updated statement, Devon & Cornwall Police said: "Police were called shortly after 2pm on Saturday 30 July to a report of a possible unexploded ordnance located in the garden of a property at Godolphin Cross.

"A number of roads were closed and properties were evacuated.

"EOD attended and assessed the item, which was found to be a fence post".
