Last updated 25th Nov 2021
The Met Office has issued a second severe weather warning for Cornwall and named the first of this year's winter storms.
Storm Arwen is set to batter the Duchy on Friday and Saturday, with the risk of flying debris, large waves and travel disruption.
TWO yellow weather warnings for strong winds are now in force and both cover the whole of the Duchy.
What can we expect?
A yellow weather warning will be in force from 9am until 23.59pm on Friday 26th November.
A second warning, also for strong winds, will be in force from 00:00am on Saturday 27th until 6pm the same day.
The Met Office says high winds may cause some travel disruption and damage, including:
- Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
- Some damage to trees, temporary structures and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
- Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
- Some roads and bridges may close
- Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
What does the storm forecast say?
The forecast for Friday reads: "Storm Arwen will bring high winds southwards from northern Scotland during Friday.
"Gusts will widely reach 55 to 65mph in many coastal areas with the highest gusts in coastal parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland where gusts in excess of 65mph are expected in some areas".
The forecast for Saturday reads: "Storm Arwen will bring high winds to most areas during Saturday.
"Gusts will widely reach 55 to 65mph in many coastal areas with the highest gusts in coastal parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, southwest England and northeast England where gusts in excess of 65mph are expected in some areas.
"Winds will start to slowly ease over Scotland and then northern England during the course of the day".
What should I do to prepare?
The Met Office has the following safety advice to prepare for stormy weather:
1) Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows and other glazing and break them
2) Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house, and especially large doors such as those on garages
3) Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences
4) Close and secure loft trapdoors with bolts, particularly if roof pitch is less than 30°
5) If the house is fitted with storm shutters over the windows then ensure that these are closed and fastened
6) If chimney stacks are tall and in poor condition, move beds away from areas directly below them
