NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board are asking people to be aware about a new suicide prevention helpline number circulating on social media.

They say the number, 998, is an American helpline that does not work in the UK.

A spokesperson said: "Whilst we appreciate that these posts are being shared with the best intentions, they are not helpful in terms of signposting those who may be struggling with their mental health to access the best available support services.

"If you are worried about your own or someone else’s mental health, please call the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly 24/7 NHS mental health response line, on 0800 038 5300.

"This is free to access by anyone of any age, at any time, day or night. If you, or someone you know, feels they need to access urgent mental health support, they will listen to you and assess how best to help."

Further mental health resources and support can be found on the NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board's website.
