"Significant progress" is being made on Cornwall's roads as part of the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme.

The update from National Highways comes just after road closures in the Duchy - and ahead of overnight closures from Monday (7th November).

Neil Winter, senior manager on the A30, Chiverton Cross and Carland Cross scheme, said: "These particular closures are for maintenance teams within national highways to come and do gully clearing, drainage clearance and other things in preparation for winter at the same time every year. It's the same diversion route so that particular closure is not necessarily related to our scheme.

"However, to minimise any disruption we are going to utilise those closures. We're piggy backing onto them from the scheme point of view to accelerate any works we can do to our scheme to get a slightly ahead".

Following recent closures, Neil says "significant progress" has been made.

He told us he believed the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme will unlock tourism in Cornwall, with more people encouraged to use the road and opening up for strategic traffic.

Neil said: "There are structures being constructed, there's actual tarmac down in certain locations. Just last week we opened a brand-new road in Cornwall, the A 3075 which is open to traffic so significant progress and milestones have been achieved.

"There is no doubt some disruption and we are working to we are minimize it as best we can. It's a vast scheme, very complex, so just keeping traffic flowing the way we do I think is quite an achievement".

Plans remain for the roads to be completed ahead of 2024.

Neil added: "Our aim and our main pushes to achieve open for traffic in December next year. There's still a long way to go and there's a lot of work to do, but we're confident".
