The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 782 in the last 24 hours, official figures show – and three more deaths were recorded.

A total of 92,335 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on January 12 (Wednesday), up from 91,553 on Tuesday.

Latest weekly figures show Cornwall recorded 5,874 new cases in the seven days to Thursday 7th January, giving the Duchy a case rate of 1,020.6 per 100,000 people.

However the figure is far higher in some areas, including Launceston at over 1,200, St Columb Minor and Porth at over 1,300, St Ives & Halsetown at over 1,400, and Torpoint, where the case rate is currently over 1,600 per 100,000 people.

As of Thursday 12 January, 53 patients with Covid were being treated in Cornwall's hospitals, up 12 on the same time the week before.

There were also three more coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 641 people had died in the area by January 12 (Wednesday) – up from 638 on Tuesday.

It means there have been seven deaths in the past week, which is an increase on five the previous week.

They were among 8,439 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

The figures also show that four in five people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 430,921 people had received both jabs by January 11 (Tuesday) – 81% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 83% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

It comes as figures reveal more than 3.5 million boosters have been delivered in the South West.

Falmouth has opened its first permanent Covid vaccination centre, offering first, second and booster jabs.
