Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed 16 officers attended the Truro Cathedral area to facilitate a peaceful protest and that "a number of placards which were contrary to the law remained on display despite police advice."

They added that seven people were arrested on suspicion of offences under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

They remain in police custody.

Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement: "Officers engaged with those present to ensure everyone in attendance was kept safe, whilst facilitating the public’s right to peaceful protest."

Chief Superintendent Matthew Longman said: “These are challenging operations for officers as they strike a balance between upholding the law, whilst serving their local communities.

“Today we have made every effort to deliver a compassionate service, that is empathetic to individuals involved, but which does fulfil our obligations.

“I am extremely proud of the way officers conducted themselves in this highly emotive area of police work.”

The protest in Truro today was one of 20 demonstrations announced by Defend Our Juries, who are campaigning to restore fundamental rights in relation to protest and freedom of expression in the UK ahead of a judicial review of the proscription of Palestine Action later this month.
