Cornwall service held to shine spotlight on suicide prevention
A service of reflection will take place at Truro Cathedral for anyone affected by suicide
A service of reflection is taking place in Cornwall to shine a spotlight on suicide prevention.
The event held at Truro Cathedral is for anyone affected by suicide and is being hosted on World Suicide Prevention Day (Sunday 10 September).
It will feature specially chosen readings, along with music from Mousehole Male Voice Choir and Singing for Wellbeing; a support group for people bereaved by suicide.
It's one of two being held across the Duchy this month to offer a place for people to reflect.
Anne Embury, lead for Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's Suicide Liaison Service, which helps organise the service, said: "We are very grateful to the Cathedral for holding this special service, which is open to anyone who has been affected by suicide and is a chance to reflect on lives lost to suicide.
"The service has come to mean a lot to those who attend, as it is both moving and uplifting in equal measure. It offers people a calm, supportive and safe space to come together and reflect."
The service starts at 2pm and is open to anyone of all faiths or none, with no need to book.
Refreshments will be available and after the service, there will be a chance to speak to a Samaritan, the Trust's chaplains or the Suicide Liaison Team.
On Thursday 14 September, people are being invited to don their swimming caps for the Turn the Tide on Suicide Swim in Penzance.
This is the second year the event will be held at the town's Jubilee Pool. It aims to help raise awareness and break down the stigma associated with suicide.
Anne Embury from the Trust's Suicide Liaison Service added:
"Both events will help bring a focus on how we try to reduce the number of suicides in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. They are very much about creating hope through action."
Swim tickets will be free from 9am to 10am and you can book your slot on the Jubilee Pool website.
