Air ambulance called to serious four-vehicle crash on Cornwall's A30

One person has suffered potentially life-changing injuries

Four vehicles have been involved in a serious crash on the A30 in north Cornwall.

A stretch of the westbound carriageway is currently closed between Launceston and Bodmin, near to Colliford Lake.

Police, firefighters, the air ambulance and highways teams are all on the scene.

Four people are thought to be hurt, with one having suffered potentially life-changing injuries.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that one person has been airlifted to the major trauma unit at Derriford Hospital.

"Emergency services are currently in attendance at the A30 at Bodmin, near the Jamaica Inn, following reports of a four vehicle collision.

"Four people are reported to have sustained injuries including one person with potentially life changing injuries.

"Highways are putting road closures in place and vehicles have been turned around.

"The incident is ongoing at this time."

"We were called at 13:26 by police to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles with at least one person trapped in a vehicle on its roof. One appliance and a rescue tender were mobilised from Bodmin Fire Station and one appliance and a wholetime station manager were mobilised from Launceston Fire Station.

"On arrival crews met with police and assessed the scene. They found three casualties on the roadside and confirmed one casualty was physically trapped inside a vehicle with potentially serious injuries. Crews waited for the arrival of paramedics and Cornwall Air Ambulance critical care staff to put together an extrication plan to safely remove the casualty from the vehicle.

"At 14:49 crews confirmed the casualty was successfully extricated from the vehicle and transferred to the Cornwall Air Ambulance and on to the major trauma centre at Derriford Hospital.

"During the incident Highways England assisted emergency services with road closures and putting a diversion in place."

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

"A30 Westbound closed, slow traffic due to accident, four vehicles involved from Codda (Bolventor / Jamaica Inn, Bolventor) to A38 Launceston Road (Callywith, Bodmin).

"Closure expected to be in place for some time. The accident had gone across both sides of the road, however the Westbound side has been closed to assist. The Eastbound side is slow due to onlookers.

"Diversion - via the A395, A39 back to the A30 at India Queens."
