Serious fire in Camborne after 'fireworks explode' in shed

The nearby secondary school has not been affected

Update: Cause of serious fire in Camborne being treated as suspicious.

A serious fire has broken out in Camborne near to a secondary school.

Firefighters and police are on the scene on Cranberry Road, and the road is closed in both directions.

Emergency services received several 999 calls just after 8.30am on Tuesday morning (7th September).

The nearby school, Camborne Science & International Academy, has not been affected by the fire.

All the students are safe and you can read the statement from the school below.

Police say it is understood that some fireworks had exploded in a shed at the property.

Luckily no one has been injured.

Fire crews from Tolvaddon, Truro, Penzance, Helston, Newquay, St Just and St Austell are on the scene and tackling the blaze.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to reports of a shed on fire in Cranberry Road, Camborne at around 8.40am today.

"The fire service attended the incident and it is believed that some fireworks had exploded.

"No one was harmed in the explosion.

"The incident is ongoing."

Camborne Science and International Academy has released a statement on Facebook.

It reads: "Important notice for all Parents/Carers

"We are aware of an incident near the site of CSIA and want to reassure all Parents and Carers that all students and staff are safe.

"*EDIT (Following comments) - there has been a fire opposite the school.

"*Testing for students in Year 9 is still taking place - we ask that students use the lane beside the school and enter through the rear green gate.

"**Transport between the CSIA Campus and Nexus Campus - pick up and drop off at the end of Cranberry Road.

"The incident is being dealt with by the fire service and police. We will continue to follow their advice and guidance.

"We will post later today an update with regards to the dismissal of students and end of the day arrangements."

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 08:37 critical control received the first of multiple 999 calls reporting a house fire in Cranberry Road, Camborne. Three appliances were initially mobilised from Tolvaddon, Truro and Penzance and two flexi duty officers.

"On arrival an officer sent an assistance message for an additional appliance and aerial ladder platform (ALP), which were sent from Helston and Newquay respectively.

"Two additional flexi duty officers were mobilised along with an incident command unit from St Just and Operational Support Unit from St Austell.

"Crews are still working at the scene to extinguish the fire."

It is understood that a number of nearby residential streets are closed.

Inrix Traffic and Travel says: "Cranberry Road closed due to serious fire near the School.

"Police advise a fire in the area and a number of residential streets are closed nearby.

"The fire is not affecting the school."
