Police have confirmed a man has suffered a serious injury after a crash on the A38 in south east Cornwall.

They say the casualty had to be cut free following the single-vehicle collision near Liskeard. He has been taken to Derriford Hospital.

The air ambulance was called to the scene near Castle Motors early on Thursday afternoon, along with firefighters and paramedics.

The incident, between Trerulefoot Roundabout and the junction for Horningtops, happened at around 1.15pm.

As of 3.30pm, the westbound carriageway remains closed.

A force spokesperson said: "Police were called at 1.15pm today, 8th September, following a single-car collision on the A38 at Liskeard - close to Castle Motors.

"Two occupants were in the car. One man was trapped. He has been extracted and has sustained a serious wrist injury. He has been taken to Derriford Hospital.

"Police, fire, ambulance and the air ambulance are on scene.

"The A38 is closed westbound from Trerulefoot to Castle Motors".

Inrix Traffic and Travel says the road closure is affecting traffic travelling towards Liskeard.

Inrix said: "A38 Westbound closed, queueing traffic due to earlier accident and fuel spillage between A374 (Trerulefoot roundabout, Trerulefoot) and B3251 (Horningtops). Congestion to Tideford.

"The road remains closed following an accident first reported around 13:30.

"Investigation work has since been completed and a fuel spillage will need to be treated before the road re-opens".
