A vigil that was set to be held in Cornwall, to demand safety for women across the country and show solidarity with Sarah Everard, has been cancelled.

The 33-year-old disappeared while walking home in south London last week.

Police found human remains in woodland in Kent on Wednesday, which have now been confirmed to be those of Sarah

A series of Reclaim These Streets vigils were organised around the country this weekend, including in Newquay.

But organisers have now confirmed that the peaceful and socially-distanced vigil has been cancelled due to the lockdown restrictions.

The Metropolitan Police have ben in discussion with organisers of the main event in London, saying people must stick to the rules.

"Hi everyone, I'm really sad to say that I've had a call from Newquay Police and they've advised that they, along with the National Police Council, are not in support of any vigils taking place across the UK tomorrow night as they will in breach of Covid regulations, despite the Met and other authorities initially being in support. Apparently the Home Secretary will be making this clear later today.

"The Police advised that if anyone attends the Barrowfields tomorrow with the intention of attending the vigil they will be asked to leave - if you refuse they will enforce this.

"__Please consider taking part in the Doorstep vigil instead.

"This is extremely sad, difficult and enraging as there were thousands of people across the country who were prepared to use this moment to show solidarity and demand safety for women & girls tomorrow night in a Covid-secure way.

"WE WILL BE ORGANISING A PEACEFUL VIGIL AS SOON AS REGULATIONS ALLOW - so please stay on this page and join our Reclaim The Night, Cornwall page for further updates.

"Finally to any women and girls out there who are feeling vulnerable, sad or angry right now...we see you - we hear you and we are with you! You are not alone."
