Man rescued after digging hole on Newquay beach which then collapsed on him

A man has been rescued after he dug a hole on a beach in Newquay which then collapsed on him.

He became trapped under the sand on Fistral beach on Thursday evening.

Lifeguards, coastguard, police, firefighters and members of the public all worked together to dig him out.

The casualty was brought back to safety and then left in the care of paramedics.

"Police were called by the Coastguard at 5.30pm last night 1 July to Fistral beach following reports that sand had collapsed onto a male causing him to become trapped.

"Emergency services and members of the public removed him from the hole and he was left in the care of the ambulance service."

"At approx. 5.15pm yesterday (1 July), HM Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting a person trapped due to a sand dune collapse at Fistral beach.

"Newquay and Padstow coastguard rescue teams as well as the Fistral RNLI lifeguards were sent alongside the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police and the South Western Ambulance Service.

"The casualty was rescued from the sand dune and handed into the care of the ambulance service."
