Cornwall Council is urging households, due to have their rubbish, recycling or garden waste collected over the next two days, to put it out early as the heatwave hits.

The warning comes as a four-day amber weather warning for extreme heat kicks in for parts of the Duchy.

The Met Office has issued that for areas north of Bodmin, with temperatures expected to hit 30C or higher over the coming days.

Heat health alerts are also in force across our region, issued by the Met Office and UK Health Security Agency.

The advice, especially to vulnerable residents, is stay out of the sun at peak times and keep hydrated.

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, the council said: "Due to the hot weather, rubbish, recycling and garden waste collections will be taking place earlier in some parts of Cornwall tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday to help keep our crews safe.

The earlier collections will be taking place in North, Mid and East Cornwall where the Met Office Amber heat warning is in place. However, we advise everyone due to have rubbish, recycling or garden waste collections on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th August to put it out for collection by 6am, to ensure it is collected.

"If you're putting it out the night before, make sure it's covered so the gulls and other wildlife can't get to it.

"At the moment, collections are due to go back to their usual time on Monday 15th August".
