River Fowey in Lostwithiel could become Cornwall’s next official bathing spot

Cornwall could soon welcome a new official swimming location, with the River Fowey in Lostwithiel among 13 sites the Government is proposing for designation across England.

If approved, the tidal river flowing through the heart of Lostwithiel would be subject to regular water quality monitoring, giving swimmers, paddle boarders, and other water users confidence in the safety of the river.

The move is part of a wider plan to improve water quality nationwide, with rivers, lakes, and seas being cleaned up and monitored more effectively.

The proposals also include the first designated bathing spot on the River Thames in London and East Beach in West Bay, Dorset - the filming location for the TV drama Broadchurch.

Other sites range from popular beaches to rivers and meadows with scenic or cultural significance.

Water minister Emma Hardy said:

“Rivers and beaches are at the heart of so many communities, where people come together, families make memories and swimmers of all ages feel the benefits of being outdoors safely."

"Our plans to designate new bathing water sites show how we are backing local ambition and recognising the pride in places that matter most to people.”

Currently, Cornwall has a number of beaches and coastal areas already designated for swimming, but the River Fowey would be one of the first inland river sites in the county to receive official status, giving locals and visitors a new safe spot to enjoy water activities.

The consultation is now open, allowing communities to have their say on the proposed sites.

If confirmed, the designation will add to the 464 official bathing locations across England, ensuring clear water quality standards and supporting efforts to protect the environment for swimmers and wildlife alike.
