A pub in Cornwall has been fined £1,000 after a group of football fans were caught ignoring Covid restrictions.

A video emerged showing the group without face coverings singing, dancing and chanting, both inside and outside the premises, during England's match against Scotland in the Euros.

Cornwall Council says there was no evidence that the pub’s management tried to address the behaviour or attempt to enforce social distancing measures.

The licensee was today Thursday, June 24th given a fixed penalty notice of £1,000.

"It’s really disappointing to see businesses allowing this behaviour to take place at such a crucial time in the fight against Covid-19.

“We all know that case numbers have risen in recent weeks and this is having a significant effect on individuals and families, as well as businesses, some of which are struggling to stay open due to staff isolating. We must all play our part to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Most businesses are working hard to ensure that the restrictions are adhered to and we thank them for this. For those who blatantly disregard the rules, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action.”

Councillor Martyn Alvey, the portfolio holder responsible for Public Protection at Cornwall Council

“In recent weeks we have seen a rise in cases both locally and nationally. This is predominantly because of the Delta variant which is much more transmissible and spreads very easily indoors. Therefore, it’s really important that we continue to follow the national guidance – hands, face, space and fresh air - to keep the virus at bay.

“I urge everyone to have the vaccine and, more importantly, make sure you have both doses. Also make twice-weekly testing part of your routine so we can identify cases, even when people have no symptoms.”

Rapid Lateral Flow Tests are free of charge and can be picked up from your local pharmacy or ordered online.

Cornwall Council’s Covid Enforcement Team are supporting businesses to remain open and to keep staff and customers safe. Businesses can access support and up-to-date guidance and resources to help them comply with the latest Covid restrictions on the Business Regulatory Support website.

Due to the appeal period, the premises in question cannot be named.
