A cordon had to be put up at a popular beach in Newquay after a possible 'unexploded ordnance device' was found.

A member of the public made the discovery on Towan at lunchtime on Wednesday (6th October) while using a metal detector and called the emergency services.

The coastguard attended the scene along with police officers.

After closer inspection it was decided that the object was probably a piece of 'old rock' and was not of any concern.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "It was reported to HM Coastguard just after 1pm today (October 6) that a member of the public had found a possible unexploded ordnance at Towan Beach in Newquay.

"The Newquay and St Agnes Coastguard Rescue Teams attended along with Devon and Cornwall Police.

"The item was inspected and was found to be nothing of concern."

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were called to Towan Beach, Newquay, at around 12.40pm with a report that a possible unexploded ordnance had been found by a member of the public while metal detecting in the area.
