Police officer remains 'stable' after suffering serious burns in Newquay

A police officer who suffered serious burns during an attack in Newquay remains in a stable condition.

He was airlifted to Treliske Hospital with injuries described as 'severe' following the incident yesterday.

A man has since been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and grievous bodily harm.

He is also being held on a charge of attempted grievous bodily harm against a second police officer who was not injured.

The man is due before Truro Magistrates later today.

"A man has been charged following the incident in Newquay yesterday, 11 September.

"An officer was airlifted to Royal Cornwall Hospital with serious burns. He was later transferred to Derriford Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

"Blagovest Hadjigueorguiev, 30, of no fixed abode, Newquay, has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and causing grievous bodily harm GBH with intent against a police officer.

"He is further charged with attempted GBH with intent against a second police officer who was uninjured.

"He is due to appear at Truro Magistrates' Court today, Saturday 12 September.
