Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth is going to be lit up in yellow and blue for the people of Ukraine.

The Leader of Plymouth City Council has expressed his solidarity for the country's residents, following the invasion by Russia.

Councillor Nick Kelly, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: “Can I start by expressing my deepest sympathies with the people of Ukraine.

"I am horrified by what is happening. The invasion clearly violates international laws and threatens human rights and democracy.

“I absolutely stand in solidarity with all Ukrainian people, and very much hope that the international community progress meaningful sanctions against the Russian regime for their actions.

"We must stand also with our local Ukrainian community in Plymouth, who will be suffering greatly today and concerned about their friends and family at home. To show our support, tonight (Thursday) Smeaton’s Tower will be lit up in yellow and blue and tomorrow, the Ukrainian flag will be flown on Council buildings."

Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP, and Labour's Shadow Armed Forces Minister, Luke Pollard said:

"Russian aggression towards its neighbours is nothing new sadly, but the fact that we now see a major nuclear superpower in Russia invading its neighbour again is one of the darkest threats to European security that we have faced in a very long time.

"We must be robust in supporting Ukraine, it is a sovereign democracy whose people have chosen its democratic elected government, that should not be replaced or defeated in a war of aggression by Russia, this is a very serious time.

"We know that Russia has already threatened the United Kingdom in their use of chemical weapons in Salisbury only a few years ago, now is the time to show Putin that we mean business and strongly defend and support our allies against his aggression."
