It's expected we'll hear plans for a Mayor of Cornwall will be officially thrown out today, with a vote taking place.

It was part of devolution proposals, which would have seen more local power and investment from Central Government - but meant that there would have been a Mayor for Cornwall.

Yesterday it was announced the plans will be scrapped, after a consultation period found little support in the Duchy.

Cornwall Council say they've spoke with residents, business owners and stakeholders, and found whilst the proposed Devolution deal has support, there is also "significant" concern for the requirement to move to a directly elected Mayor for Cornwall.

The authority say as a result of their consultation it is "it is with the greatest regret" they are unable to recommend accepting a deal that includes the requirement of a Mayor for Cornwall.

Instead, they plan on pursuing a 'Level Two' deal for devolution, which would retain as many elements of the 'Level Three' deal as possible.

It's hoped in particular to keep plans for ÂŁ10m a year for adult education, so training and skills provision meets the need of the local economy.

The Level Two deal won't include the ÂŁ360 million investment fund, or the ÂŁ8.7 million for brownfield housing development, but Cornwall Council say they hope to work with the Government to secure the best possible outcome for Cornwall, and the people who live and work here.
