People across Cornwall urged to be vigilant of Covid 'misting' scam

A warning has gone out to Cornwall about a scam that involves conmen offering to treat the home against coronavirus.
Reports from other parts of the UK suggest that a number of gangs are travelling the country and offering services known as “misting” or “fogging” which they claim will kill any trace of coronavirus present in the house.
Officials are urging residents to report any concerns about possible scams.
Nigel Strick, from Cornwall’s Trading Standards, said: “We did receive a number of reports at the beginning of Lockdown 1 concerning cleaning firms offering to disinfect homes as a precaution against Covid-19 but now this latest scam is trying to convince residents that these so-called “fogging” or “misting” machines are some kind of miracle cure. In fact they are probably less effective than a thorough clean with ordinary household cleaning products.”
Cllr Rob Nolan, Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, is keen that no-one in Cornwall should fall victim to this latest Covid scam.
Cllr Nolan said: “These reports again illustrate the shocking tactics that will be employed by scammers and fraudsters in an attempt to persuade us to make payments for bogus treatments or services. Taking advantage of the Covid-19 outbreak is simply appalling behaviour.
“And to make matter worse, scammers will often pretend to be calling from any one of a number of official organisations such as Cornwall Council, the NHS, telecom or utility companies.
“Our advice is as clear: NEVER deal with anyone who calls at your home without a prior invitation, no matter how friendly or convincing they may appear.”
