It is being reported that a Cornish pensioner, who is battling cancer, had to wait 15 hours for an ambulance, outside in the rain.

David Wakeley is understood to have suffered a fall at his home in Indian Queens on Monday night.

The 87-year-old is said to have suffered seven broken ribs, two fractures to his pelvis and an arm injury.

His story has gone viral on social media, after his family shared photos of the makeshift tent they built to shelter him.

The pictures show a football goal draped in a tarpaulin, bags and umbrellas.

According to The Mirror, David's son-in-law, Trevor Crane, said the family knows NHS staff are "great" and "trying their best", but described the system as "broken".

In a statement, South Western Ambulance said: "We are shocked and sorry for the experience this 87-year-old gentleman endured.

"Our ambulance clinicians strive every day to give their best to patients.

“Health and social care services are under enormous pressure.

"We are working with our partners in the NHS and social care in Cornwall to do all we can to improve the service that patients receive".
