There were five more coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.

The dashboard shows 753 people had died in the area by April 5th (Tuesday) – up from 748 on Monday.

It means there have been 14 deaths in the past week, which is an increase on 12 the previous week.

They were among 9,559 deaths recorded across the South West.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.

A total of 144,065 deaths were recorded throughout England by April 5th (Tuesday) – up from 143,752 the day before.

Latest weekly figures show Cornwall recorded 5,914 new cases in the seven days to Thursday 31st March, giving us a case rate of 1,027.6 per 100,000 people.

The recent spike in cases has triggered a warning from the Cornwall Council's Public Health Team, that living with coronavirus does not mean ignoring it.

Officials say high case numbers are having a big impact on schools as well as hospital beds and staffing.

As of Tuesday 5th April, 133 patients with coronavirus were being treated in Cornwall's main hospitals.

Spokesperson Doctor Ruth Goldstein says people can still come on holiday safely here, but is urging people to take precautions.

She said: "Easter is obviously a time, particularly in Cornwall, where we start getting our sort of on-mass tourists and our population swells.

"The impact of this potentially on the situation that we've got at the moment means that where we're relying on people going out and about and keeping some space and being outside as much as possible, is going to be harder.

"As we head towards Easter, it won't be so easy to walk down our highstreets as freely without bumping into people, and that is a slight concern as we know Covid loves groups of people and its ability to transmit is really high".

Anyone who feels unwell or who has any symptoms of coronavirus is being advised to stay at home, to help stop the spread.
