Over 40 coronavirus patients being cared for in hospitals across Cornwall

It comes as the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust declares an 'internal critical incident' due to extreme pressure

It has been revealed that over 40 patients with coronavirus were being treated in hospitals across Cornwall this week.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust was caring for 36 Covid-19 patients as of Tuesday, figures show.

NHS England data shows the number of people being treated in hospital for the virus by 8am on October 19th was up from 30 on the same day the previous week.

The number of beds at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust occupied by people who tested positive for Covid-19 decreased by 12% in the last four weeks – 28 days ago, there were 41.

It comes as Treliske declares an 'internal critical incident' because of extreme pressure.

Meantime the Cornwall Partnership Trust was caring for five coronavirus patients in hospital as of Tuesday.

NHS England data shows that is up from two on the same day the previous week.

There was one bed occupied by a Covid patient four weeks ago in Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Across England there were 6,099 people in hospital with Covid as of October 19, with 733 of them in mechanical ventilation beds.

The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalised nationally has increased by 10% in the last four weeks, while the number on mechanical ventilators has decreased by 5%.

The figures also show that 35 new Covid patients were admitted to hospital in Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust in the week to October 17. This was up from 23 in the previous seven days.
