The number of coronavirus cases in Cornwall increased by 1,339 in the last 24 hours, official figures show – and one more death was recorded.
A total of 88,510 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Cornwall when the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on January 6th (Thursday), up from 87,171 on Wednesday.
Latest weekly figures show Cornwall recorded 5,824 new cases in the seven days to Saturday 1st January, taking the Duchy's case rate to over 1,000 per 100,000 people.
However the figure is far higher in some areas, including Hayle at over 1,300, Liskeard at over 1,400, Newquay West and East at over 1,500 and Torpoint, where the case rate reached 2,194.8 per 100,000 people.
Several NHS trusts have declared a 'critical incident', including Plymouth's Derriford Hospital.
Troops are being deployed in London to help support hospitals struggling with shortages.
Cornwall has been operating at 'critical incident' level since October, but NHS Kernow says it is as badly affected by Covid absences as other parts of the country.
There was also one more coronavirus death recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Cornwall.
The dashboard shows 635 people had died in the area by January 6 (Thursday) – up from 634 on Wednesday.
It means there have been three deaths in the past week, which is a decrease on five the previous week.
They were among 8,357 deaths recorded across the South West.
The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Cornwall.
Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death.
The figures also show that four in five people in Cornwall have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.
The latest figures show 429,727 people had received both jabs by January 5 (Wednesday) – 81% of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.
Across England, 83% of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.
Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
